Meniscus Transplant

What is Meniscus Transplantation Surgery?

Meniscus transplantation is an advanced surgical procedure that replaces a damaged or removed meniscus in the knee with donor tissue. The meniscus is a crescent-shaped cartilage that cushions and stabilizes the knee joint, absorbing shock and reducing stress on the bones. Damage to the meniscus can occur due to injury or degenerative conditions, leading to pain, instability, and long-term joint issues like osteoarthritis.

Who Is a Candidate for Meniscus Transplantation?

Meniscus transplantation is typically recommended for patients who have undergone partial or total meniscectomy (removal of the meniscus) and are experiencing persistent knee pain, swelling, or limited mobility. It is most suitable for younger, active patients who have not yet developed significant arthritis in the knee. The procedure is not typically performed in individuals with advanced osteoarthritis, as it may not provide the desired benefits in severely damaged joints.

Ideal candidates include:

– Patients under the age of 50 with stable knee joints

– Individuals with minimal or no advanced arthritic changes

– Those who still experience pain after other conservative treatments

Post-Surgery Follow-Up

Following the surgery, a structured rehabilitation program is essential for optimal recovery. This includes:

  1. Immediate Post-Op Care: Patients may experience swelling and discomfort, which will be managed with medications, ice therapy, and elevation. Crutches may be used to keep weight off the knee.
  2. Physical Therapy: Rehabilitation will typically begin shortly after surgery to restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion. The therapist will guide patients through exercises to avoid stiffness and promote healing.
  3. Long-Term Care: Full recovery can take several months, depending on the patient’s adherence to the rehabilitation plan. Activity restrictions will gradually be lifted, and patients can expect to return to light sports and activities after 9 months.

Meniscus transplantation offers significant benefits in pain relief, improved mobility, and long-term knee health, helping patients regain their active lifestyles. Consult our specialists to see if this procedure is right for you.
